In the activities panel on every ELA article, students can respond to a Newsela authored Write Prompt or a Write Prompt customized by their teacher. Teachers can then review and grade these responses either manually, or with the Luna Autograder
Review Write Prompt Responses
From an Assignment's page - click on 'score now' under the Write Prompt column for any student who submitted the work. This will pull up all students who submitted written responses to the write prompt.
The students written responses will then populate on your screen.
Note: Teachers can only review write responses by level. If students have submitted written responses on different levels, then teachers will need to toggle between each of the levels that students have submitted a response on.
Manually Grade Write Prompt Responses
From here you can select a score for each submission, and/or return the writing response back to the student for revision:
You can also share feedback with the student by typing it in the Add note for student field.

Use Luna Autograder
To use the Luna Autograder for a Write Prompt activity:
Click on 'Score Now' to bring up the ELA Write prompt responses review page
Click 'Grade with Luna' and allow our AI assistant the time to process and generate the grades and the rationale for it.
Review the grades and rationale generated by Luna (you can click on 'what do these mean?' to view the rubric criteria too)
At this point you can manually over-ride the AI grading, select to return the work to the student for revision, and select to add the AI-generated rationale as feedback to the student (optional)
(optional) Add your own note for the student by manually typing into the notes field
Proceed to Approve Grades by clicking on the button (you can also select 'Undo' to start over)
The grades and notes will be submitted (indicated at the top-right corner of the student's response), and will become visible to the students. You can click on "Show grading rubric" to further review the criteria.
