Mobile Apps

Written by Neta Raz Studnitski

Newsela has mobile apps for students in iOS and Android. In the apps, students can complete all actions that they can complete in the web browser version of Newsela. The apps are designed exclusively for students.

iOS App

The Newsela Student app is created for students. To access Newsela as a teacher or parent, use a web browser such as Safari or Chrome.

As of October, 2026 Newsela's iOS App has been updated to the latest version. With this new update we have introduced real-time saving of student work / progress, reminders with local notifications, and full access to all web features - with the exception of Student Sets and saving offline work.

Devices set to ‘auto-update’ will receive the new version automatically. Otherwise, students can download the new iOS app from the the Apple App Store and use account login or LMS to sign in.

The Newsela app requires iOS 15 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Students can do everything in the app that they can do on the web, making it a perfect opportunity to extend learning on Newsela outside the classroom with independent reading or homework assignments. In the iOS app, students can:

  • Explore high-interest topics and discover fresh content across current events, science, technology, animals, sports, arts, pop culture, engineering, space, and more.

  • Supercharge their reading experience with flexible reading supports like language translation and listen mode.

  • Interact with articles on a deeper level by annotating text or completing checks for understanding.

  • Stay on track with their assignments, due dates, and set up reminders

  • Take on reading challenges to build independent reading habits and earn classroom rewards set by their teacher

How to Join a Teacher's Class in the App:

  • For students without Newsela accounts: Click Join. Then select the option to enter a class code.

  • For students with Newsela accounts: From the settings tab, tap Classes. Then click Join Class in the upper right-hand corner and enter the class code.

Android App

The Newsela app is not available from the Google Play store for Android users.

We encourage users to access Newsela from their mobile browser. Most features of Newsela content like leveled texts, quizzes, Power Words, and more, are available when you access Newsela.com through your mobile browser. Android app users will lose features such as offline article viewing and annotations. As a workaround for offline article viewing, we recommend users select “Print” to save the article to their device as a PDF.

Android app can run offline, so even while offline students can read articles and complete assessments that were downloaded the last time they had an internet connection. When the device next comes back online, it will submit any work that was completed while offline.
