Quizzes and Reviewing Quiz Scores

Each level of most Newsela articles has its own 4-question reading comprehension quiz.

Students can complete quizzes at newsela.com or on the Newsela mobile app.

Newsela ELA Quizzes

Many Newsela articles in your Newsela ELA subscription include a four question quiz, aligned to two state reading comprehension standards (including Common Core State Standards, Reading: Informational). Fiction content in Newsela ELA has quizzes aligned to Reading Literature standards.

To preview the questions and which standards the quiz is aligned to, follow these steps:

  1. Click the article you'd like to review.

  2. If the right-side Activities tab is not already expanded, click the floating "Teach this article" button on the upper-right of the article.

  3. Locate the Quiz item line in the right-side Activities panel, and click 'view/edit' next to it

  4. All questions will be listed in order with indication of the specific reading skill associated with the question

  5. Click on the reading skill within each question's tile to reveal more about the reading skill associated

  6. You can also click on 'View standard' to review the standard associated with each question

  7. By default all questions are selected, you can un-check the box next to question(s) you do not want to include in the quiz

To find content associated with a particular standard, search using the Reading Skills filter.


Newsela Social Studies Quizzes

Many Newsela articles in your Newsela Social Studies subscription include a four question quiz, aligned to two state Social Studies standards and a second quiz with national reading skills.

To preview the questions and which standards the quiz is aligned to, follow these steps:

  • Click the article you'd like to review.

  • If the right-side Activities tab is not already expanded, click the floating "Teach this article" button on the upper-right of the article.

  • Locate the Quiz item line in the right-side Activities panel, and click 'view/edit' next to it

Newsela Essentials Quizzes

All Newsela articles in your Legacy Newsela Essentials subscription include a four question quiz, aligned to two reading skills.

To preview the questions and which standards the quiz is aligned to, follow these steps:

  • Click the article you'd like to review.

  • If the right-side Activities tab is not already expanded, click the floating "Teach this article" button on the upper-right of the article.

  • Locate the Quiz item line in the right-side Activities panel, and click 'view/edit' next to it

  • All questions will be listed in order with indication of the specific reading skill associated with the question

  • Click on the reading skill within each question's tile to reveal more about the reading skill associated

  • You can also click on 'View standard' to review the standard associated with each question

Quiz Answer Keys

Teachers can always view answer keys, and students see answer keys after submitting a quiz.

To view answer keys from a teacher account, follow these steps:

  1. Go to an article and select the level for which you want to see the quiz answer key.

  2. Click Teach this article to open the activities panel.

  3. Click 'view/edit' next to the Quiz item line

  4. Click on 'Preview' at the top of the panel to view the quiz answers

  5. Use the 'Next' and 'Back' buttons at the bottom of the panel to navigate to the next or previous question on the quiz


Review Quiz Scores

Teachers have a few options for reviewing quiz activity:

  • View quiz averages in the Reading Activity table of the Reports tab for each student for a selected date range, either for activity in your class or for all activity. From here, you can navigate into an individual student's Reading Summary page, where you can see quiz scores for their assignments in your class, other teacher's classes, and independently-taken quizzes.

  • View how many students have viewed an assignment on your Assignments page. Click on an assignment to go to the Assignments Review Page, where you can see the class quiz average for the assignment and the number of quizzes completed for the assignment.

Download Assignments Data

To complete your own manipulations of student assignments data, you can download that information as a spreadsheet.

Simply click Download Data from the Assignments tab and you will get a spreadsheet that includes:

  • Classroom

  • Student Name

  • Student Username

  • Article Title

  • Article Level

  • Last Activity

  • Write Score

  • Count of Annotations

  • Quiz Score

  • Time in Article

Reading Skills

Each level of each Newsela article has its own 4-question quiz connected to informational reading skills.

For an overview of how students are doing on each reading standard, Newsela ELA and Newsela Essentials teachers can take these steps:

  1. Go to the Classroom Data section under Reports.

  2. Each student will have an indication of how well they're doing on a particular reading skill.

  3. To navigate into an individual student's Reading Summary page, click their name. You'll be able to view each kid's Reading Skills activity for a specific class or quiz.


Reset Quiz Scores

To allow students to retake quizzes, teachers can reset quiz scores.

From an assignment:

  1. Click Assignments at the top of the page

  2. Select the assignment you want to reset

  3. Click on the Quiz column's title. This will bring up the assignment data for your class.

  4. Click the 'reset quiz' button within the grading portal

  5. After clicking on the reset option, a list of students will appear. Select the student(s) you wish to reset, and confirm by clicking the blue reset quiz button
