Classroom Data
Within the Classroom Data report teachers have the option to view the following reports by class, with the ability to further drill down in the data by student, aggregated from all content accessed:

Teachers with a Newsela STEM license also have access to a STEM-specific Classroom Data report. This report offers the following data:

To access the Classroom Data report
Click on Reports at the top of any Newsela page
Select 'Classroom Data' from the dropdown menu
Use the filters at the top the screen to narrow down the data by class and/or by date range
You can also click into the Power Words tab to view Power Words reporting
From here you can click on the name of any student to display a more in-depth view of the reading summary and Power Words reports

Begin with selecting the desired class and activity from the dropdown at the top right of the page, and adjust the desired date range on the dropdown at the top left.
Class Overview
Get a rapid snapshot of how your students are reading on Newsela.
Average Reading Level -
Average Lexile level for texts viewed by class: Based on the Lexile level of all nonfiction texts viewed by students in this class
Average grade level for texts viewed by class
Texts read by grade levels - The number of texts that were viewed either at, below, or above your class grade level.
Total texts viewed by class
Minutes average reading time
Reading Skills
Each level of every Newsela article has its own 4-question quiz connected to reading skills. When you have a Newsela ELA or Newsela Essentials subscription, you can use the Classroom Data report to understand your students' levels of success on reading informational text skills.
The Reading Skills section includes students' quiz performance in all reading skills listed below.
Anchor Skills
What the Text Says
Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
Main Idea, Key Details, and Summarization
Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.
Connecting People, Events, and Ideas
Analyze how and why individuals and events, or ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.
Word Meaning & Choice
Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative and figurative meanings and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone.
Text Structure
Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text (e.g. a section, chapter, scene or stanza) relate to each other and the whole.
Point of View and Purpose
Assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of a text.
Interpret Multimedia
Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively as well as in words.
Arguments & Claims
Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence.
Note: This feature is not available for Newsela Social Studies and/or Newsela Science subscriptions.
By default the table will present data for all reading skills. You can filter the data to a specific reading level by selecting the desired one from the dropdown above the table.
Sort the table by performance on each of the anchor skills, by clicking on an individual row's title. First click will sort performance on the skill by low-high, a second click will change the order by high-low.
Click on a student's name to access their individual report.

This section includes students' overall reading activity across texts, including:
Text level - average level of articles viewed
Views - articles viewed
Active Time - average active time on article
Quizzes - number of quizzes taken
Scores - average quizzes score
Write Prompts - average score
Annotations - average submitted
Power Words - average score

Student Activity - Count of all content views vs STEM content
Unique student content views
Unique student STEM content views
Content breakdown - Proportion of articles vs videos consumed by your class
STEM Disciplines - Count of content pieces engaged with by STEM discipline.
Time Spent - Average active minutes per article and per video.
